Hosting as a Love Language: Easy Ways to Build Mom Community
No. 71 - Because connection shouldn’t feel like one more thing to do.
One of the greatest gifts in motherhood—especially in these early years—is finding community with other moms who are in the thick of it too. There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by women who just get it. Who understand the mental load of remembering sunscreen and snack cups and how impossible it is to make a phone call during daylight hours. Who know what it’s like to be so deeply in love with your kids and also completely touched out and over it some days.
Mom friends are the ones we go to when we have a question that feels too small or too weird to Google. They're the group text we vent to after bedtime goes sideways for the fourth night in a row. They’re who we turn to when we need a new dinner idea, a pediatrician recommendation, or advice on whether that summer camp is actually worth it.
But building that kind of community doesn’t just happen. Sometimes, it needs a nudge. And often, the best way to make space for that connection is through small, simple gatherings. Not a big party. Not a perfectly hosted dinner. Just an easy night in with a purpose—like swapping books, sharing recipes, or drinking wine in sweatpants.
Here are a few low-lift ideas that make it easier to gather:
Book Swap Night
Everyone brings a few books they’re ready to part with—ones they loved, didn’t love, or never quite got around to reading. Lay them out on a table, make some tea or pour a glass of wine, and let everyone go home with something new to read.
Wine Night (Sweats Encouraged)
This is not a “clean your house” or “buy three types of cheese” situation. Just pour what you have, wear what you want, and invite friends to do the same. The focus? Unfiltered conversation and a chance to be seen.
Closet Clean-Out Swap
Invite friends to bring a few gently used clothing items—think adult clothes, kid gear, accessories, or shoes—and set up a casual “shop” in your living room. You’ll clean out your closet and might find a gem or two to take home.
Recipe Swap Dinner
Have everyone bring a dish they rely on during busy weeks—plus a printed copy of the recipe. You’ll get a few new ideas for your meal rotation, and no one has to cook the same night twice.
Friendship Bracelet Making Night
This one’s playful, nostalgic, and weirdly therapeutic. Pick up a $5 bead kit or ask friends to bring craft supplies they already have. Whether or not anyone finishes a bracelet, you’ll all leave with lighter hearts.
Flower Bundle Party
Each guest brings one bunch of grocery store flowers—roses, eucalyptus, carnations, whatever. Set out vases, clippers, and ribbon if you have it, and mix & match to create take-home bundles.
None of these ideas require much prep, money, or fanfare. Just a willingness to open your door and see what kind of magic unfolds when women gather.
Consider this your sign to get something on the calendar. Text a few mom friends. Start a group chat. Use this summer to strengthen the friendships you have—or make new ones. Because in this season of life, we need each other more than ever.
