We Need Each Other
No. 69 - A story about new pants, a late-night favor, and the kind of connection no app can replace
I recently bought a pair of pants for vacation, flowy, breezy linen ones that I just fell in love with and couldn’t wait to wear. There was just one problem: they were way too long. I sent a quick text to our neighborhood moms' chat, asking if anyone knew of a seamstress who could hem them fast. Within minutes, a neighbor and friend messaged me: “I can do it for you.”
My first instinct? Absolutely not. She has a full-time job. She has young kids. There was no way I could possibly accept her offer. It felt like too much to ask.
But then I paused.
I thought about how the roots of any friendship, any real relationship, are built on trust. And how trust grows when we allow others to help us. When we show up for each other. When we admit, even in small ways, that we can’t do it all alone.
So I let her hem the pants.
And in doing so, our friendship grew just a little bit deeper.
The truth is, this past week alone, I’ve relied on my community more times than I can count, and they’ve relied on me too. We picked up packages for friends while they were out of town. A girlfriend swung by late at night to borrow a gallon-sized Ziploc bag so she didn’t have to run to the store. And I invited a mom with a newborn baby, who seemed desperate for some adult time, to our next wine night.
None of it was earth-shattering. None of it made the news. But all of it mattered.
Because there are some things this hyper-digital world of ours will never be able to replace. And human connection, real, in-person, messy, generous human connection, is one of them.
We need each other, especially as moms. It’s tempting to keep putting on the brave face. To carry on like we’re superheroes (and hey, most days, we are). But it’s so much more rewarding to let people in. To accept the help. To give it right back.
So today, maybe send the text. Knock on the door. Say yes when a friend offers. Show up when you can. Ask when you need to.
Because this is how we build something beautiful, one small kindness at a time.
I’m embarrassed to admit that I finished this book in 2 days, I was hooked! It reminded me of Crazy Rich Asians meets an Emily Henry novel. Beware, it get’s STEAMY!
I love that Regal Movie’s is back with their Summer Movie Experience, featuring $1 family movies throughout the summer. A perfect way to beat the heat.
If you’re looking for a swimsuit cover up that’s more stylish than your shorts and t-shirt, but also won’t break the bank, I recently picked up this one, this one, and this one and love them! Run, don’t walk. You’re going to want these this summer!
